Froude had a vast range of interests: he was a prolific writer and an accomplished horseman and rider, played cricket and rugby football, and even played for South Africa in polo. His published works include the historical romances Theodore: A Tale of the Sixth Century (1854); The Three Clerks (1857); The Chronicles of Ballytrain (1859), which includes the novel The New Crusade; and Emigrants to Freedom (1859), which chronicles the voyage of the "Emigrant" over two oceans to settle the newly established colony of Victoria, Australia. Froude's last work was Travel and Adventure in South Africa (1886).
